Wall Mounted Shelves

Wall mounted shelves are extremely flexible for both storage and display. I use them both to store books and kitchen supplies, as well as to display trinkets, my kid’s trophies, photographs, and much more.

They allow you to easily create customized storage and display solutions, and there are so many to choose from that it's easy to find ones that suit your needs as well as decor. They are made of various materials like glass, melamine, wood, wire, aluminum and more.

The ones in my cellar are extremely basic units that are high on functionality with little or no regard for decor. As they are in the basement, no one really sees them, and we store toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, canned foods, paint, candles, and much more on them. They are wide and made of nondescript white boards.

Contrast this to the shelves in my office which need to be functional as they hold business supplies, books, and lots of miscellaneous, yet they need to look professional as I often have clients visit my office.

The shelves in the dining room are functional but the emphasis is on decor. They occupy one entire wall and hold my wife's beautiful pottery.

Wall mounted shelves can be fixed, meaning they are mounted exactly where you want them (or maybe thought you wanted them) and cannot be moved, at least not without difficulty. Shelves can also be adjustable, meaning they can move easily. Tracks (often called "standards") are attached to the wall first, and then brackets connect to the tracks. The shelves sit on the brackets, and the brackets are easily movable up or down should you want to adjust your shelves later.

Floating shelves are interesting as they don't have traditional brackets that can often get in the way and may be unattractive. They instead have internal brackets and are installed so that you never see the bracket at all. They sometimes look fragile but are not.

Wall mounted shelves are very flexible. No wonder I seem to have them in almost every room in my house and my office too!
