Stackable Folding Bookcase

I’d seen these for years and thought they were pretty neat. A bookcase that was easy to store, easy to transport, and trivial to set up.

And stackable to increase storage space without increasing their footprint too. They would have been ideal right after college when I seemed to move literally every few months, and the little furniture I owned was a big hassle (try moving furniture in a 2 seat sports car!). But alas, I don’t think they made them then.

Well, now a stackable folding book case is ideal for me, in fact I’m getting more. I’m in a temporary room in my house and got tired of having my books in boxes and piled up on the floor. I do reference some of them quite often, and found myself digging through boxes and piles every week or two looking for a particular book. It was good in a way, as I got rid of the books I no longer want or need, but a better solution was required.
I did consider buying some unfinished bookcases and finishing them evenings after work, but although I like the idea of finishing them, the reality of the work required and the time it would take. Also, I was hesitant to buy regular bookcases as I may be in this room temporarily. Instead foldable and even better stackable ones made imminent sense.

The ones I found were wood, 3 tier or shelves, and available in different finishes. I love wood and choose natural. I looked at stackable folding bookcases on Amazon first to get an idea of what was out there, and found some locally at a department store so I could get them right away. Prices were similar, even with shipping.

The least expensive ones I found seemed pretty cheaply built and I did read online reviews about many of them being damaged in the box upon opening. I settled on one for about $50 or $60 (from memory).

One word of warning though. Although these are wonderful, I was amazed at how much assembly was required! The directions were not great, I’m not good at following directions, and the small screws were a hassle to install with the (included) allen wrench. It didn’t help that I dropped one and it took several minutes to find crawling on the floor!

Would I do it again! Yes, and as I mentioned above, I’m getting more to increase my storage space, and will probably end up storing more than just books on them in the end. And when I move, I can just easily fold them up and take them along with me.
