Corner Wall Shelves

Very few of us have enough storage or display room in our houses, yet there are some areas that are always traditionally underused.

Under the bed is one example - it's a wonderful place to store, for example, season shoes (hopefully in an organized fashion, for example in plastic see through shoe boxes). Corners are another underutilized space in many houses, are can be used quite easily used with ready made or custom corner wall cabinets, units, mounts for computer or television displays and more. One of the simplest and easiest ways to use corner space effectively is with corner wall shelves.

There are all types of corner wall shelves available, and you are limited only by your imagination. Some wall shelf units may sit on the floor but most are wall mounted and great when you have a chair or table for example in the corner yet want to use the space above. And of course if you are a woodworker or handy with other materials, the sky really is the limit. My friend Craig designed and built this beautiful set of mahogany and glass  corner shelves that perfectly complement his decor and that proudly display his bowling trophies.

There are plenty of uses for corner wall shelves. One that we just mentioned before is to display items, as well as keep them out of harms way. In Craig's case, that is to keep fragile items on display yet away from his slightly too hyperactive puppy, and in my case from my little kids. You can display trophies, pictures in elegant frames, mementoes, knickknacks etc. We have some children's trophies (the Children's Tractor Pull contest at the local country fair in Lee, NH), wedding pictures and some irreplaceable pictures of grandparents and great grandparents, as well as some knickknacks from vacations and trips.

Of course, you can also store books on corner wall shelves. Many modular bookcases actually have components that allow them to extend around a corner. Personally, I can never have enough book storage, whether for me or for my children's books.

They are also great for organization, and can store miscellaneous items you want to have at hand but have no where else convenient to place. Telephones and answering machines come immediately to mind, as do TV remote controls and more. They can be an elegant place to store glasses, for example wine glasses, martini glasses, etc.

We also have candles on most of our corner wall shelves and flashlights on many. Unfortunately with frequent power outages lately, this has become a near necessity and the candles add an elegant touch as well. In the summer, we also store bug spray and suntan lotion on one not too far from the front door.

Corner wall shelves and corner floor shelves are great ways to increase storage, safely display items like mementoes and knickknacks, organize items and keep ones you want handy, like TV remotes, close at hand. And they can also nice spice and flavor to your rooms.
