Bookcases for Sale

There are lots of places you can find bookcases for sale, depending on your needs and requirements.

If you need simple, functional, and inexpensive, most department stores, office supply stores, and home improvement stores carry them.  For example, within a few miles of where I sit typing right now, there is a Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Office Depot, Office Max, Sams Club, Lowes, and Home Depot, all of which carry bookcases.

Check the quality carefully as many times the cheap ones are not very durable, and are especially prone to bend and warp if heavy loaded (and mine always seem to be!) and sometimes break if you attempt to move them to clean. Most cheapies are made of some kind of particle board, which may look like wood but is not as durable. Still, even the cheapest are decent  if not overloaded and stationary.

You can also buy unfinished bookcases in many places. These are generally high quality wood bookcases, but need to be finished. If you have a couple of free evenings, don't mind this type of work, and have somewhere to work, you can get quality and durable bookcases for a reasonable price.

Furniture stores often have a wide array of bookcases, and prices too. That beautiful cherry bookcase is going to cost a few bucks, but hopefully last almost forever.

You can also buy or find used ones in many cases. Look at Craigslist and Freecycle.org, as well as yard sales and the like. I have two heavy duty and beautiful oak bookcases in my office I found used at a used office furniture store.

And of course, you can also hire someone to create custom built in bookcases for you. I'm hoping to do this in the future.

One last place to look for bookcases for sale is online. You might pay a little more with shipping or perhaps not, but will typically find a much wider selection, especially if you are looking for corner or other specialty bookcases.

In my home and office, we have a selection of bookcases from various places, including a cheapie from an office supply store (it's falling apart but has survived over a decade), two my wife found on sale online, a few we got when our parents moved into smaller homes, a couple we bought unfinished that my wife finished, one from a yard sale, two from a used office supply store, and at least a couple that we have no idea where they came from!
